Fabrispa

I started by trying to design a better iron. My initial ideas revolved around making it more ergonomic. However, I realized that my user research had a deeper insight hidden in it.

Everybody wanted ironing to be less of a chore and almost everybody showed the same behaviors - they viewed ironing as a batch process. I thus designed Fabrispa to enable quick and easy prepping of clothes by limiting its use to a single pair of clothes.

Realizing that ironing was commonly a batch process- i.e., people always ironed a pile of clothes for future use, made me think of how might I design something that lets people quickly freshen only the outfit they decide to wear just before they go out.

I researched other ways to freshen clothes and came across steaming. But steamers in the market were also designed for a batch process - they had large water containers and took time to produce steam.

So I decided to design a steamer that has an affordance for only one pair of clothes. The way it works is like a pressure cooker. Thus for a small amount of water, there is a large volume of pressurized steam created. The low water volume also enables fast steaming of water in a small, portable form factor.
